Up for Re-Election

June 2026

Alan Wong is the Supervisor for San Francisco’s District 4 (the Sunset & Parkside). Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed Wong on December 1, 2025, following a turbulent stretch of District 4 leadership after the recall of former Supervisor Joel Engardio and the resignation of interim appointee Beya Alcaraz.

Wong is a lifelong Sunset resident and a graduate of San Francisco public schools (De Avila Elementary, Herbert Hoover Middle School, and Abraham Lincoln High School). The son of immigrants from Hong Kong, he began at City College of San Francisco, later graduating from UC San Diego and earning a master’s degree in public affairs from the University of San Francisco.

Before joining the Board of Supervisors, Wong served for five years on the City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees (including two terms as board president). He has also worked as a legislative aide at the Board of Supervisors and at the Children’s Council of San Francisco, helping families access child care. In addition, Wong has served in the California Army National Guard since 2009 and completed both the San Francisco Fire Department’s Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) training and the San Francisco Police Department’s Community Police Academy.

One day after being sworn in, Wong joined a 7–4 Board majority to approve Mayor Lurie’s “Family Zoning Plan.”

Policy positions & priorities

Because Supervisor Wong is newly appointed, most of what we know comes from his background and early public statements.

Supervisor Wong’s early priorities appear to include:

  • Public safety & emergency readiness: Wong has emphasized practical, neighborhood-focused readiness through his National Guard service and local emergency/civic training. He has also been involved with public-safety-oriented civic groups.
  • Working families & child care: Wong’s professional background includes advocating for children and families through the Children’s Council of San Francisco, with experience helping families navigate child care access.
  • Education & City College: As a former City College trustee and board president, Wong has focused on protecting affordability and access, including support for programs like Free City College and language offerings that serve San Franciscans where they are.
  • Housing & neighborhood change: Wong supported the Family Zoning Plan and has framed the debate as balancing new housing opportunities with neighborhood concerns and tenant protections.
  • Service delivery & trust in government: At his swearing-in, Wong emphasized restoring trust and making city services easier to access for residents who feel City Hall has become a burden rather than a help.

Key votes and early actions

Housing: Family Zoning Plan — YES (December 2, 2025)

  • Wong voted yes on Mayor Lurie’s Family Zoning Plan as part of a 7–4 majority.
  • Wong indicated he supports moving the plan forward while continuing to pursue “trailing” legislation and amendments, including additional tenant protections as he gathers feedback from District 4 residents.
  • The Family Zoning Plan is intended to expand housing choices and add capacity near transit and commercial corridors as the City works to meet state housing requirements.

District 4 transition & local issues

  • Wong takes office after a period of instability for District 4 leadership and will be responsible for navigating major district debates—including the ongoing aftermath of fights over the Upper Great Highway and “Sunset Dunes” policy changes.
