Stephen Sherrill was appointed by former Mayor London Breed on December 18, 2024. At the time, Sherrill served as the Director of the Mayor's Office of Innovation, focusing on addressing homelessness in San Francisco. One of his major accomplishments in this role was the launch of ASTRID, a city database consolidating housing, health, and emergency response data. City service providers have utilized ASTRID to better coordinate their response to homelessness.
Supervisor Sherrill took the place of former Supervisor Catherine Stefani who left the seat open after being elected to the California State Assembly in November 2024. He lives in Presidio Heights with his wife and children.
Former Supervisors:
Policy positions & priorities
Safe and Clean Streets
Supervisor Sherrill has stated that his primary priority is "safe and clean streets" for both District 2 residents and all San Franciscans. During his tenure in the Mayor's Office of Innovation, Sherrill championed innovative solutions to address homelessness, including developing new methods for counting individuals living on the streets and assessing their specific needs. As supervisor, he plans to work closely with the Department of Public Works and the Department of Public Health to ensure District 2's streets are safe and clean for everyone.
He supports fully staffing the police department, reducing unnecessary paperwork, and equipping officers with tools such as automated license plate readers, speed cameras, and resources to improve burglary clearance rates. Sherrill is also a strong advocate for ambassador programs and has praised organizations like Urban Alchemy for their contributions to safer streets.
Affordability
Stephen is committed to addressing San Francisco's affordability challenges, which he identifies as a critical issue for families and local businesses. His approach emphasizes gradual, data-driven changes to policies that impact affordability, ensuring they are effective and sustainable. He believes in proposing policies, evaluating their impact, and refining them as necessary. Stephen will always listen to his constituents to better understand their needs and perspectives.
He also acknowledges the challenges local businesses face due to outdated regulations, such as the pre-Prop M policy that charged businesses additional fees for every cash register installed. Addressing these kinds of obstacles is a key part of his strategy to make San Francisco more affordable for all.
Recovery and Treatment
Supervisor Sherrill recently praised AB2475, a state bill introduced by London Breed and Matt Haney, which extends the timeframe for hospitals to create post-release treatment plans from five days to 30 days. In a statement on social media, Sherrill commented, "We have too many laws that prevent mental health and substance use treatment providers from helping people who desperately need it. This is a great start."
He supports drug screening for welfare recipients and believes the current recovery system lacks sufficient emphasis on reintegrating individuals into the workforce after treatment. While he supports a housing-first approach, he stresses that it must be accompanied by substance-use treatment and job assistance. To Sherrill, these three elements are critical, and he advocates for rigorous tracking to ensure progress toward these goals.
Constituent Services
One of Supervisor Sherrill's first actions in office was negotiating with SFMTA to delay a transition from two-hour free parking to paid parking. This decision was in response to community feedback, and Sherrill continues to work with SFMTA to find a long-term solution that meets the needs of residents.

Addressing Our Budget Deficit
Stephen views addressing San Francisco's budget deficit as a multi-year endeavor rather than an opportunity for selective funding cuts based on political preferences. He emphasizes preserving funding for emergency services and economic recovery while advocating for careful evaluation of spending priorities to ensure fiscal responsibility.
